Superintendent Garrett is currently
serving a third consecutive four-year term as Oklahoma's elected
State Superintendent of Public Instruction and is the only woman
in Oklahoma history to hold this title. As Oklahoma's
Secretary of Education from July 1988 to January 1995,
Superintendent Garrett has the distinction of being appointed
Cabinet Secretary of Education by two governors - a Republican
and a Democrat. She earned a Master's Degree in Guidance
and Counseling at Northeastern Oklahoma State University and was
a classroom teacher in Muskogee for fifteen years. She
holds both a Standard Superintendent and Administrator's
Certificate. She attended the John F. Kennedy School of
Government at Harvard University. Superintendent Garrett
was inducted into the Oklahoma Educator's Hall of Fame in August
2000 and is also a member of Northeastern State University
Alumni Association Hall of Fame. She has one son, Charles, who
is an attorney. Superintendent Garrett will serve on the Board
of Regents of Oklahoma Colleges during her tenure as State
Superintendent of Public Instruction. |
